Today, Danny, Cooper and I went to the farm. Sloans Creek Farm in Dodd City, Texas, is a local farm that raises and sells grass-fed and sustainable livestock. The event was hosted by Slow Food Dallas; we are not members but received an email announcement about. It was really cool because we paid $5/person, took an item for the pot-luck lunch (we contributed my favorite broccoli salad) and enjoyed the hospitality of the family that runs the farm.

I thought this would be such a great opportunity to introduce Cooper to a real farm and a chance for him to get up close and personal with the farm animals (click here for pics). They raise three breeds of cattle, sheep, goats and a heritage breed of hogs called Red Waddle. Oh my goodness, I was so enamored with those little piggies! Maybe because you see cows and goats all the time, but I (personally) was really excited to see the pigs. Cooper was equally excited because he got to hear that they really do snort!

It was a bit of a drive. About an hour and a half out to this farm. So, we took Cooper at nap time and he crashed on the way. Once we got there, they had the pot-luck lunch with the farm's own sausages. There was a gospel group which played while we ate and then we got a tour of the farm.

We checked out the cows. The owner explained how he grinds his own feed of grasses and grains so he can stay away from soy and corn fillers (love that) and then we moved on to the pigs. Yay! This farm is one of four in the state with this breed of hog and he has the largest number. Consequently, he was really selling the pork products!!

Cooper thought the pigs were cool. We got pretty close to a little pig that was in the cow pasture. They had moved all the hogs over to another pasture the night before, but this one and his momma didn't want to go. Unfortunately for this little pig, the feeders were in the other pasture and he was hungry. So, while we were getting the tour, he came running and squealing at the fence. It was so funny. Cooper was completely in awe of this little guy. Then we got go back and see the baby piglets that were still nursing. The farmer picked one up and let the kids pet him. He also squealed quite a bit because he did not like being held, but Cooper was right in there petting with the rest of the kids.

A hay ride was next, but they didn't have enough room for everyone and had to make two runs. The day was winding down, though, and we decided not to sit around and wait our turn. So, we headed out about 4:30 which was perfect. Cooper talked and sang the whole way home. I think he really had a great time. And we bought some pork chops and bacon (I wanted to buy some steaks and more, but we just stocked up at the store) so we will see how it turns out.
